BFS loan helps Oldham scaffolding firm build a new future

James Brierley has launched a new scaffolding business in Oldham, helped by a £25k loan from Business Finance Solutions (BFS), the North West delivery partner of the government’s national £310m Start Up Loans programme and a lending partner of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

James has over 25 years experience running teams and working within the scaffolding and building industry and is using his loan from BFS to launch Rose System Scaffolding, investing in a new generation of scaffolding equipment that enables the company to offer an efficient, safer and more cost effective service.

James will also be training and creating jobs for over twenty people, including apprenticeships, over the next few years and is working with well established contractors, including Emanuel Whittaker on projects helping deliver improvements to local residents.

Using the lightweight and ergonomic Layher Allround scaffolding products alongside innovative software, allows James and his team to produce 2D and 3D accurate scaffolding drawings, to deliver quotes and to run a full project management system.

James said: “With the help of the loan from Business Finance Solutions, I’ve been able to create a business that combines my lifetime of experience and expertise with the very latest and best building products on the market. Using the funding to invest in high quality stock, we are now delivering a world class and innovative way of working to what is often seen as a very traditional sector.

“The benefit to our clients is that we are able to work with incredible accuracy and can erect and dismantle the scaffolding much more quickly, saving them time and money.”

Roger Seddon, Head of Lending at BFS, said: “James is a great example of how the Start Up Loans programme is helping people at the top of their game in all professions – from scaffolders to solicitors – to start their own businesses and to bring new and exciting alternatives to their field.
James is very well known within the industry by potential clients, partners and stakeholders and they and we have enormous faith in his ability to build this business into a real game-changer in the building trade.”

BFS will see £15 million allocated to new start-ups across the North West over a two year period, creating around 3,000 new businesses and over 5,000 new jobs in the region. BFS is the finance arm of The Growth Company and supported by the GM Combined Authority and Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership. BFS is a key alternative source of funding for businesses in Greater Manchester and has grown a comprehensive range of finance products from £500 through to £500k, with support on raising early stage equity through the Co Angel Investment Service of up to £2m. BFS currently manages over £100m of publically-backed small business investments across the UK.
