Developer ensures Leeds building is a real pearl

Work to transform a landmark Grade II listed former office building in Leeds city centre into 26 one and two bedroom apartments is nearing completion following a significant investment by private developer Khalsmith.

Pearl Chambers, which used to be known as the Pearl Assurance Building, has a statue of the life insurance company’s President and Founder, Patrick James Foley high up on the building. Instantly recognisable, Pearl Chambers, is located on The Headrow right in the centre of Leeds’ business district.

Built in 1911, Pearl Chambers has four storeys and plenty of historic and characterful detailing throughout the building. The work is due to complete in the next couple of weeks, with a selection of apartments available for sale now.

Jonathan Morgan, Managing Director of Leeds city living specialist Morgans, which is marketing the scheme, says: “Pearl Chambers is one of those buildings in Leeds everyone knows. In a really central location and steeped in history, it’s perfect for residential use. The developer has worked really hard to retain as many of the character features as possible, restoring the original windows, retaining the ceiling heights and the original surround which means that all of the apartments have their own individual feel.”

Khalsmith has previously converted other buildings in Leeds city centre into successful residential schemes including 42 Park Place which proved really popular with investors and owner-occupiers.

Jonathan adds: “It’s great to see a smaller scale developer creating a sustainable use for this well-known building. Inside the specification is to a very high standard, and combined with the building’s excellent location close to the railway station and all the city centre’s main leisure and retail offerings, this development has plenty of appeal.”

A number of apartments have already been sold off plan, and there are currently a handful of two bedroom homes available ranging in price from £210,000 to £350,000.

Jonathan adds: “High quality, individual schemes in the heart of the city centre are few and far between these days, which is why Pearl Chambers is creating so much interest.”
