Dual success for Newcastle construction & property consultancy

Summers-Inman, the award-winning construction and property consultancy based at Newcastle Great Park, is pleased to announce the dual success of one of its most senior staff.

Malcolm Shiels, who worked for Summers-Inman between 2006-2010 and currently, since October 2016, has been promoted from associate director to director.

This latest step up the career ladder, to director, is a reflection of the increasingly responsible roles he has held on multimillion pound projects like the £200m Building Schools for the Future programme in Newcastle, as well as several projects for Go Ahead plc across the UK.

Mr Shiels is currently working on Newcastle Helix in a health and safety governance role while supporting several colleagues on the management of the Severn Trent Water term maintenance contract as the go to health and safety adviser. He is also providing major support to Your Homes Newcastle in both a Construction Design Manager context and as a key health and safety adviser.

Speaking about his latest career boost, he said: “I was over the moon to be told about my promotion to director. I feel very valued – although my role will not change substantially, as I was already involved in most aspects of the business – but I definitely feel a sense of greater responsibility.

“Looking to the future, I will be continuing to place health and safety wellbeing at the heart of the business, to benefit not only our team, but all those that we work with across a wide range of industry sectors. It is my goal to prepare Summers-Inman for the next 25 years in terms of ensuring that clients see us not only as a first-rate construction partner but as a provider of real value.”

Mr Shiels has also been appointed national chair of the construction group within IOSH, (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health). IOSH has 47,000 members worldwide, with 15,600 of those being part of the Construction Group. The Construction Group leads on safety, health and wellbeing matters – which are critically important to the construction industry.

This national role, which is likely to have a three-year term, will see him, amongst other responsibilities, acting as a conduit for partnering and collaborative working with various institutions and professional membership organisations, giving him regular contact with industry leaders and enabling him to work at the forefront of current thinking on health, safety and wellbeing within the global workplace, as it unfolds.

Aside from his IOSH role, Malcolm is also working with the Association of Project Safety and has recently been appointed to Constructing Excellence North East’s new advisory board.

Summers-Inman operates nationally throughout the UK from offices in Edinburgh, Leeds, Leicester, London, and Stafford as well as Newcastle.
