Durham school children get a taste of the house building industry this National Apprenticeship Week

Local school children take part in National Apprenticeship week as they attend a career session with five-star house builder, Barratt Developments.

Coxhoe Primary School welcomed Barratt Homes staff from local housing development, Burdon Green, to deliver a careers session on Monday to children aged 6 to eleven.

The session was designed by the leading housebuilder as part of National Apprenticeship Week to inform the school children about the apprenticeships and careers available at Barratt Developments.

In delivering the session, the site manager from the local Burdon Green development gave insight into his own Barratt journey, and explained the value of apprenticeships and the career pathways available with Barratt Developments, from joinery to sales.

Demonstrating life as a Barratt employee, the children were shown the PPE that Barratt Developments’ staff members wear on site, and were given the chance to wear high-vis vests and hard hats themselves.

Lloyd Tate, Senior Site Manager at Barratt Homes’ Burdon Green development said: “We’re extremely passionate about the work we do here at Barratt Developments so it was great to go into the school and share some of this with the school children. We have a lot of apprentices working with us across a range of roles, and we always look forward to welcoming more onboard.”

Jayne Bartle, Headteacher at Coxhoe Primary School said: “We’re grateful to Barratt Developments for delivering a careers session to our school children. Teaching children about different career paths at a young age is crucial, and the children enjoyed hearing about Barratt Developments’ apprenticeships. They particularly enjoyed dressing up in PPE and getting a flavour for life as an employee.”

National Apprenticeship Week occurs annually to highlight the work achieved by employers and apprentices across the country.

Barratt Homes, Burdon Green development has a variety of three and four bedroom homes available from just £102,997. Located in Coxhoe, the development is just 5 miles from Durham city centre and is surrounded by beautiful nature reserves.
