Leading engineering, environment and design consultancy Sweco UK has expanded its presence in the North East with the launch of a new office in Stockton-on-Tees.

Located within the Durham Tees Valley Business Centre, it will complement the consultancy’s existing office in Gateshead, which provides multi-disciplinary services covering buildings, environment, energy, transportation and water and asset management.

The office has initially been occupied by a team of four transportation experts with significant experience in delivering Intelligent Transport Systems, such as smart motorways, which are being implemented across the UK.

The Stockton-based team is currently working on a variety of Highways England projects, including the implementation of a stretch of smart motorway between junctions 9 and 14 of the M3 in Hampshire.

Projects that Sweco UK is already assisting with across the North East include the A1 Leeming to Barton upgrade and the A1 Scotswood to North Brunton project.

With expansion of the Stockton office already underway, the consultancy is seeking to add further resource and is currently recruiting for positions within their Intelligent Transport Systems team including apprentice and graduate engineers as well as highways design staff (all design specialists) from technician through to senior engineer supporting delivery of both local and national projects.

Commenting on the office launch, Sweco UK managing director, Max Joy, said: “We have experienced strong revenue growth over the past 12 months, to which our consultancy work in the North East made a significant contribution.

“We chose to open an office in Stockton to give us greater access to the region and as part of our strategic growth plans across the UK. It provides us with the platform to generate further sustainable growth and gives our clients enhanced access to our services and specialisms.”

Sweco is Europe’s leading engineering and architecture consultancy, with sales of approximately SEK 16.5bn (£1.4bn) and is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. In the UK, Sweco employs 800 people and in addition to Gateshead and Stockton has offices in Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, London, Maidenhead, Manchester, Peterborough and Solihull.

Stockton-based Sweco technical director and Teesside University electronic engineering graduate, Stuart Wilson, said: “It is fantastic to be part of such a fast growing, forward thinking business which recognises the huge opportunities for business growth in the region. Sweco’s investment in the area also aligns with the Tees Valley Combined Authorities Strategic Economic Plan which identifies six main priorities including ‘Business Growth’ and ‘Transport & Infrastructure’.

“We intend to expand our presence within the North East which is why we are already on a recruitment drive, and speaking to existing and potential clients about how we can support multi-disciplinary project delivery via the Stockton office.”
