The first of three FinTech North events is taking place in Leeds this month, bringing together policy and decision makers across public and private sector, alongside some of the region’s most well established business, media, financial services and tech firms.
Taking place on Thursday 26th April at the aql offices in central Leeds, as part of Leeds Digital Festival, the event will focus on the skills, resources and economic strength of the FinTech community in the north, as well as exploring opportunities for further growth.
Now in its third year, FinTech North was established in 2016 by Leeds-based Whitecap Consulting and White Label Crowdfunding to reinforce the UK’s Northern Powerhouse region as a centre of excellence for FinTech.
The event will be attended by sponsors, speakers and visitors including representatives from Government and the Northern Powerhouse, high street and investment banks, overseas investors, entrepreneurs and academics, industry regulators such as the Financial Conduct Authority, and influential bodies including the Confederation of British Industry.
The day will be divided into three sessions: FinTech Landscape; FinTech Fundamentals; and ending with a FinTech Showcase, a session of pitches from innovative FinTech businesses.
The first session, FinTech Landscape, will include speeches from Dr. Chris Sier, FinTech Envoy (England) at HM Treasury, Anna Wallace, Innovate Head of Department, Financial Conduct Authority, and Henri Murison, Chief Executive of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership. These will be followed by a panel session, during which the speakers will be joined by Ross Mumford, the Assistant Director of Financial Services at CBI.
During the second session of the day, FinTech Fundamentals, delegates will have the opportunity to hear from CYBG, TISA and Equiniti Credit Services, who will discuss how to build a regional FinTech Hub and the challenges that brings.
Stuart Sherman, Founder and CEO of Toronto-based firm, IMC, will return to the event for this session, and speeches will be followed by a FinTech skills and resources panel session, with insight from academics from the University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University and Trinity University. Chief Executive of Leeds City Council, Tom Riordan will close the session outlining the support the Council is giving to FinTech firms across the region.
The final session, FinTech Showcase (sponsored by the Department for International Trade) will feature short pitches from eight growing FinTechs. This will be followed by a panel discussion on investment chaired by Sara Parker, North Invest, and keynotes from Carl Austin, CTO of BJSS, Dr Steven Finlay, Head of Analytics at Computershare, and Nick Harrison, Commercial Director at First Direct.
The Leeds event is the first in a series of three FinTech North events. The other two conferences take place in Manchester (22nd May) and Liverpool (12th June).
