Georgian cottage gets a makeover as hair and beauty salon moves in

A hair salon has restyled an old building in a North Yorkshire market town to create a new look for its business.

Shine Hair & Beauty has restored and enhanced the original features of the Georgian cottage in Bridge Road, Stokesley, to create homely new premises with a modern feel.

Owner Stephen Macvean worked with experienced builders MRH Construction, of Potto, to put back oak doors and restore skirtings and architraves in line with the period of the building. Its age is also reflected in the choice of interior colours and décor.

Stephen said: “For the last 14 years – the past five as Shine – we have been in a big retail unit of modern clean lines which never really reflected what we were about, which is a welcoming, unpretentious salon where we value clients and look after them with great personal service.

“When the opportunity for this period cottage in Bridge Road came up, I really wanted it as it has the character and inviting feel that’s much more us. We’ve made the most of the original features and created something intimate and unique.

“We have a very loyal clientele and staff team and the feedback from everyone has been overwhelming. There’s a real buzz about the place because it’s homely and comfortable but also fulfils everything we need in a modern, professional salon.”

Stephen took advice from MRH Construction, who have worked on a number of period buildings in the area.

“Mike at MRH was project manager, builder and joiner and even worked with me on the interior design, drawing on his knowledge and experience. He’s a long-standing customer and, like us, works to a very high standard so I had total trust in him. I couldn’t have put it all together without him,” he explained.

The ground floor of the salon has three cutting and colour stations and a peaceful backwash area. There are another three stations on the first floor, while a full range of beauty services are available on the second floor.
