Green light to drive forward plans to redevelop former York garage into apartments

Plans to create a new residential development on a former car sales centre on Hawthorn Grove in York have been approved.

Plans to create a new residential development on a former car sales centre on Hawthorn Grove in York have been approved.

Designed by Brewster Bye Architects, for RHW Developments, the buildings that belonged to Glen Garage Suzuki, which closed in 2018, will be demolished. Seven apartments with a mix of one and two bedrooms will be built in their place, that fit seamlessly with the other surrounding residential properties.

The site has been vacant for three years and architect, Nathan Wilkinson, from Brewster Bye Architects believes it is ideally suited for residential development. He said: “Our design responds to the immediate context of the traditional terraced housing in the surrounding area and will provide a contemporary solution that reflects the organic growth of well-thought through residential development in this popular area of York.

“The development will re-establish the street scene and reuse a brownfield site, which is obviously an incredibly positive step forward. As part of the development, landscaped areas will be introduced to boost biodiversity.

“The design follows the rhythm set on Hawthorn Grove by the other residential buildings with varying ridge lines and we have included modern bay windows, feature brick pillars and panel detailing, grey clad dormers and a slate roof.”

The ground floor apartments each have their own garden with a paved patio and a green frontage onto Hawthorn Grove will be created with a low brick wall that has traditional rails on top. Cycle parking for residents and visitors will also be included.

Nathan added: “Residents will benefit from a great design, spacious homes and a highly accessible location, with three bus stops within 50 metres of the apartments, as well as cafes, supermarkets, playgrounds, public green space, gyms, nurseries and a post office all within a few hundred metres.”

RHW Developments is an award-winning development company with a proven track-record for delivering quality homes in and around central York. An example of a previous scheme by RHW in York is Holgate Mews, a development of six new build luxury homes on New Lane in Holgate. As part of the scheme, RHW Developments, also built a new modern social club to replace the existing Holgate Working Men’s Club.
Brewster Bye has an impressive reputation for designing several of York’s finest new build residential addresses in recent years. It designed the 258 apartments, which sit within the city’s former Nestlé factory, and the iconic St Leonard’s Place in York City Centre.
