Farrer's Colombian Coffee Pods

Lake District coffee roaster John Farrer & Co in Kendal launch a range of 100% recyclable coffee capsules.

As part of its mission to address the problem of plastic waste, in its 200th year, the Kendal coffee roasters has unveiled its own range of fully recyclable Nespresso® compatible aluminium coffee capsules.

There are three coffee flavours to choose from:

Colombian – Sourced from the famous Huila region in Colombia this coffee is wonderfully bright and fruity, with notes of toffee apple and blackcurrant.

Intense – Is an intense and complex blend of coffees, with hints of roasted nut, dark cocoa and sweet cedar wood.

Decaf – This unique blend of decaffeinated beans which delivers a rich medium bodied blended coffee with notes of nut and chocolate.

The Farrer’s capsules are compatible with Nespresso® coffee machines and are available direct through the Farrer’s website, where they are currently available on offer at the introductory price of just £19.00 for four packs (40 pods) or alternatively they can be purchased through Amazon.

Farrer’s chose to use aluminium for their capsules for several reasons, firstly the system being used protects both taste and quality of the coffee and secondly because of the huge benefit that aluminium is infinitely recyclable and can be reused in a myriad of applications; including bicycles, food and medicine packaging; construction materials; electronic components and electrical power transmission.

All you have to do is use the capsule, rinse out and place the used capsule and its foil lid in your home recycling bin. They are then collected as part of your household recycling, sent to recycling plants where they are then sorted and shredded to separate any remaining coffee grounds from the aluminium (any remaining coffee is also recovered and turned into compost), the aluminium is then smelted and reused.

Aluminium recycling is both economically and environmentally effective, as recycled aluminium requires only 5% of the energy used to make primary aluminium and has the same properties as the parent metal, which also reduces the need to source raw materials. In fact, aluminium can be recycled endlessly without loss of material properties.

Farrer’s General Manager, Dave Walsh, commented: ‘’As a company we have taken a great deal of time and care to research the best materials with which to create our capsules. We wanted to use a system that is genuinely 100% recyclable and maintained the integrity and quality of our coffee. Aluminium is a high demand material, that can be used for a diverse range of applications, but because of its material structure is fully recoverable and not only that the recycling and repurposing process uses very little energy, a closed loop recycling system, which is the perfect outcome. Not because of the material’s storage properties we can also guarantee that coffee delivered by this system will be the same high-quality time and time again.’’
