Leeds’ Well Met’s Cloth Hall Court chosen as Northern venue for important Environmental Conference

Well Met, Leeds Beckett University’s conference department, are excited to announce they have been chosen as the northern host for the conference that will launch the Environment Agency’s ‘Working with Natural Processes Evidence Base’, a significant moment for the management of flood and coastal erosion risks in the UK.

In recent years the UK has experienced repeated severe flooding, which in turn has raised the profile of Natural Flood Management; an idea that centres on the use of natural processes to help reduce flood risks. The Environmental Agency’s ‘Working with Natural Processes Evidence Base’ will combine the vast research on the topic to help develop understandings of the processes and to implement successful flood and coastal erosion risk management strategies.

The conference, which will be held on the 6 December 2017, will bring together a number of environmental specialists and keynote speakers , as well as invite communities at risk of flooding to take part, all with the intention of gaining a better insight into the work being carried out by the project.

A mirror conference was held in London on the 31 October 2017, and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) have chosen Leeds Beckett University’s Cloth Hall Court as their northern host. Well Met is dedicated to involvement in a variety of sectors and this conference is an example of their commitment to hosting a wide ride of subjects.

Sophie Dunajko, Events Programme Manager for Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, said:

“We’re delighted to be holding our upcoming event at the newly opened Cloth Hall Court. The event will launch the Environment Agency’s ‘Working with Natural Processes Evidence Base’, developed to help flood risk managers understand where and how different natural flood management measure might help them reduce flood risk and improve the environment. Leeds provided the perfect location to disseminate the project to the greatest number of people from across the region.”

Keynotes will be delivered by prominent industry and academic experts, as well as national parks management. Notable speakers include: Tim Collins, Principal Specialist – Coasts & Flood management at Natural England, and Barry Hankin, Head of Environmental Modelling at JBA, amongst many others. The conference will combine previous research on the subject and presentations from a range of existing projects that have successfully implemented Natural Flood Management measures.

The conference will take place on Wednesday 6 December 2017 at Cloth Hall Court, Leeds Beckett University.
