Lustalux Help Transform £100 Million NHS Trust with Manifestation

Inside the Christie

Lustalux Ltd has helped transform the £100 million Proton Beam Therapy Unit at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, the single largest single-site cancer centre in Europe.

Originally built in 1892, The Christie has become an international leader in cancer research and development.

The brand new Proton Beam Therapy Unit, will provide highly advanced methods of treating NHS cancer patients without the need to travel abroad and is an important step forward for treating life-threatening cancers.

Located in Manchester, The Therapy Unit required the health and safety manifestation applied to glazing on internal windows, in the final phase of the project, providing a visual impact whilst complying with building regulations.

The designers specified Lustalux, the UK’s leading specialists in window film, graphics and signage, to cover the safety glazing throughout the centre as building regulations state “manifestation must be applied to glazing in critical locations to increase its visibility and reduce the potential for human impact”.

Whilst complying with Document N “Glazing Safety in Relation to Impact”, Lustalux were presented with an opportunity to create something with visual impact, above and beyond just ticking a compliance box.

Over the five day installation period, each glass screen was completely covered leaving no area vulnerable to tampering, whilst having a frosted pattern printed in UV ink onto a clear window film, offering a practical but visually pleasing solution throughout the centre.

Richard Lancaster, Managing Director of Lustalux, commented: “The challenge was to completely cover each glass panel to ensure the longevity of each pattern as the common ‘plotter cut’ leaves vinyl graphics vulnerable to people potentially pulling away at the edges of the design.”
