Property planning specialist expands through acquisition

Jon Tweddell, director, JT Planning

An ambitious North East property planning services consultancy has acquired a sector rival to expand its client base and geographic reach.

JT Planning, based in Amble, Northumberland has acquired Big Tree Planning with offices in Newcastle and Leicester for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition allows JT Planning to grow consultancy fees, expand into new areas of the country and potentially recruit another specialist planner.

Jon Tweddell, director of JT Planning, added: “I am always looking for ways to grow the business but this particular acquisition was more opportunistic. Sam Grant, the MD, approached me because he wanted to leave the sector and ensure continuity of service for his client base.

“While Big Tree is smaller, the work is similar and in different areas of the country. We can now strengthen our presence in Durham and Teesside, along with the south.”

JT Planning, established in 2005, has a mix of residential, leisure and commercial client work mainly in Northumberland and parts of the North East. While Big Tree Planning, established in 2008, has a track record in commercial work with corporate and plc clients, many of which are in the south of England.

Jon Tweddell added: “It’s a great fit for us. This acquisition is a perfectly sustainable way to grow our business, not too big and not too small.”

During 2018, JT Planning expanded its complementary services by employing a full-time land surveyor. Following the recruitment of Kieran Atkinson and an investment in new equipment, JT Planning now provides topographical surveys for developers and a wide range of professionals including architects, engineers and land agents.
