Sheffield roofing specialist packs charity punch

A domestic roofing specialist from Sheffield-based Martin-Brooks has landed a mean right hook in the fight against cancer.

The firm’s estimator, Andrew Wheadon, entered the boxing ring at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane ground on Saturday evening to raise £550 for Cancer Research UK.

Andrew, a novice pugilist, signed up for the latest round of Ultra White Collar Boxing and following just eight weeks training with professional coaches, took on a fellow charity fighter in front of friends and family.

He said: “White collar boxing was something completely new to me and tackling this highly technical and physical challenge on behalf of such an important charity really appealed. Unfortunately, the best man won – and it wasn’t me! It was, however, a fantastic experience that has left me with a real sense of achievement and I’d like to thank Martin-Brooks and everyone else who sponsored me so generously.”

Ultra White Collar Boxing is the largest fundraiser for Cancer Research in the UK and Saturday’s event in Sheffield raised more than £15,000 in total. At the end of their training sessions, participants are matched with someone of similar weight, fitness, ability and age for a final fundraising fight.

John Elmore, Martin-Brooks’ managing director, added: “We are hugely proud of Andrew for stepping out of his comfort zone and taking the preparation so seriously for this high stakes charity event. Despite his defeat in the ring, he put up a valiant fight and most importantly has raised valuable funds for a very worthy cause.”
