Sheffield’s demand for delectable doughnuts sees PROJECT D launch delivery service

Delicious doughnuts which have been enjoyed by Love Island contestants, fashionistas and even members of the Royal family are being delivered direct to the doors of households in Sheffield.

The brightly-coloured handcrafted treats are made by Project D, a Derby-based company which is expanding its service into Sheffield after requests from sweet-toothed fans in the Steel city.

The company, which has almost 24,000 followers on Instagram, were commissioned to create doughnuts for a Love Island after show party, for London Fashion Week and an order was even placed for staff and residents at Windsor Castle.

Now the company, which changes the flavours of its doughnuts every week and also offers a vegan range, has launched a delivery service to doorsteps across the city.
When lockdown began the company furloughed its staff but, after changing their business model to a home delivery service, they have brought staff back to work and recruited even more.

Project D’s co-owner, Jacob Watts, said: “Since lockdown began, we have been inundated with requests for doughnuts – I think that now, more than ever before, people need a sweet treat to cheer them up.

“We were getting a huge number of requests from people living in Sheffield asking us to start delivering in their area, so we decided to head up the M1.

“We’re thrilled with the response we are getting and our doughnuts seem to be as popular in Yorkshire as they have been nearer to home.

“It’s very exciting for us as a business and when lockdown is over we will look at setting up a more permanent home in the city centre.”

Project D has been established for 12 months and began by selling doughnuts at food events and festivals across the Midlands, as well as fulfilling orders for corporate events and one-off commissions.

Among the company’s most popular creations is the Homer, a ring doughnut with pink icing and sprinkles; the Biscoff with a caramel base and blended Lotus Biscoff crumb; and the Red Velvet, a white chocolate base, dipped in red velvet cake with lashing of white chocolate.

The highlight of the company’s first year was being asked to create 60 doughnuts decorated with royal crests for Windsor Castle.

“We will never know if the Queen tried them, but we like to think Harry and Meghan might have shared one before they left for America, the home of doughnuts,” said Jake.
“We’ve had an incredible 12 months and thanks to the power of social media we are starting to get requests from across the UK.

“This is our first move outside the Midlands, but we think our doughnuts are the perfect compliment to a cup of Yorkshire Tea.”

The doughnuts, which are delivered in boxes which are biodegradable and compostable, cost £11 a box, plus delivery.
