Wakefield Works returns to support employment in the district

Wakefield Works, the annual event which aims to support those seeking employment from across the district, will return to the region as a series of four recruitment mornings are delivered from Job Centres every Wednesday between 28 February and 21 March.

Powered by First Choice Recruitment, the trusted experts offering a personal approach throughout the Wakefield district, and working in partnership with DWP, the event will once again bring together employers from a diverse range of sectors including manufacturing, retail, property, leisure and hospitality.

Residents from Wakefield and the five towns that are looking for work with Job Centre support are encouraged to register their interest for the sessions, which take place from 9am – 1pm, by speaking to their work coach.

The half-day events will take place at Hemsworth Job Centre on 28 February, Pontefract Job Centre on 7 March, Castleford Job Centre on 14 March and finally, Wakefield Job Centre on 21 March.

In its seventh year, Wakefield Works attracted more than 2,400 candidates last year alone, resulting in no fewer than 530 people securing full and part-time employment, as 87 employers attended events which took place in June and September 2017.

One of the event organisers and Managing Partner of First Choice Recruitment, Andy Turner, comments: “When we first launched Wakefield Works back in 2012 we wanted to make a positive difference to people that were accessing the Job Centre to find employment. Bringing together businesses and candidates is what we do best, so seeing the initiative evolve over the years has been a real achievement.

“We said that if we could get just one person into work as a result of the initiative then that would make it all worthwhile; however thanks to the partnership we have in place with the Job Centre we know that we have inspired thousands of people over the years, which is simply fantastic.

“We would certainly recommend that those that are looking for work take the time to register their interest and to come along to the events, which are taking place across the district. As well as providing access to employers, there will also be professional support available for those that would like some guidance about CVs and interview techniques, which in previous years has proven to be invaluable.”

West Yorkshire District Service Leader, Sue Soroczan, said: “I am delighted that we are a part of this fantastic initiative which connects those looking for work with employers. Anything we can do together to support people to get a job and transform their lives and quite possibly that of their families, and the wider community, must be a good thing.

“I came to one of these events last year, the atmosphere was incredibly positive and the feedback from those I spoke to on the day was excellent. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who may be considering coming along”.

The success of Wakefield Works has been used as a model of best practice which in turn has encouraged other Job Centres across West Yorkshire to host similar events. Consequently, employment initiatives are now offered in Kirklees and Bradford.
