Sport Newcastle has received a welcome boost from local wealth management and property lending experts, Tier One Capital Ltd, which helped fund its annual charity golf day at Matfen Hall, Northumberland.

The event raised more than £3,000, with all funds from the golf day going directly to Sport Newcastle’s COVID-19 Emergency Fund, helping to ensure local sports clubs are able to bounce back from the impact of the pandemic.

Mike Booth, Vice Chair of Sport Newcastle, said: “Tier One Capital’s sponsorship this year was crucial in making the day possible.

“Never has their support been more crucial and their generous backing this year has already helped us commit £4,500 to support local sports clubs and organisations affected by the global pandemic.

“We managed to attract 22 teams, most of them from local businesses, who gave generously to support our charity. To raise just more than £3,000 was a fantastic achievement in the current climate.”

Ian McElroy, Chief Executive, Tier One Capital, said, “COVID-19 has hit sports clubs, individuals and organisations hard and we are pleased to be given the opportunity to contribute to this excellent charity by helping to fund the golf day.

“Sport Newcastle has an excellent reputation developing outstanding young talent in the region and has helped create some incredible support and achievements for grass-roots sport over the years.

“We are based in the North East and corporate social responsibility is a key part of our brand values in a region we are very passionate about. We are extremely proud of our partnership with Sport Newcastle and feel privileged that we are able to help support our younger generation through sport in the region.”

The team from Northumbria University won the George Bayley Trophy, recording 2 eagles, 10 birdies and 6 pars in their Texas Scramble score of 58.

In 2nd place was the team from Swalwell based P.K. Motors, followed closely by Priory Safety Services.

The three students and member of Northumbria University staff, Rob Brown, overcame some difficult weather conditions to record their 2nd win in as many years.

Rob said, “It was a real pleasure to play in the same team as these young guys. They were hitting the ball as far as professionals and hardly missed any putts!”

Mike Booth added, “Although the win by Northumbria was phenomenal, what was also outstanding was the contribution from local businesses and our loyal supporters. All the money raised will go in to our COVID-19 Emergency Fund and will be used to help more local sports clubs survive the economic impact of the coronavirus.

“On behalf of Sport Newcastle, I’d like to thank all the competitors who took part and all the many local golf clubs, organisations and individuals who provided prizes for the two raffles.

“Special thanks go to Tier One Capital, which share our ideals of supporting young people and sport in the community.”
