Yorkshire homelessness charity opens doors to volunteers

A Yorkshire-based homelessness charity is hosting a volunteer recruitment evening in response to an overwhelming number of recent applicants.

On Thursday 22 February at 6pm, Simon on the Streets will host the event at its office, Crown House, Armley.

The event welcomes interested applicants to hear more from the charity about what a volunteer role entails, as well as meeting the current team with an opportunity to ask questions about their experiences so far.

Founded in 1999, Simon on the Streets is an independent charity, which relies solely on sponsorship, fundraising and donations. The charity works with local people who are affected by homelessness and rough sleeping in Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield. The organisation offers street-support to individuals who have complex needs and cannot access mainstream services, due to behavioural issues or mental illness.

Keen to appoint numerous volunteers to support with its vital work, Simon on the Streets has three types of roles advertised which participants can apply for.

The three roles advertised are; Soup Run Support, Outreach Support and Outreach Volunteer. Each role has a different set of duties and responsibilities, which will be explained at the event.

The recruitment event is free to attend and open to anybody that has an interest in volunteering at the charity and helping to improve the lives of rough sleepers in the Yorkshire area. Anyone interested in attending the evening can book by emailing [email protected] or calling 0113 345 2270.

Commenting on the event, general manager at Simon on the Streets, Gordon Laing said:

“It is fantastic to see that so many people have come forward and shown an interest in volunteering with us. Volunteers carry out a hugely important role at the charity and we rely heavily on them in our outreach and support work, which is pivotal to the running of the organisation.”

“We are looking forward to meeting all the applicants at the event on the 22nd, we thought this would be a great way to introduce ourselves and the roles whilst also ensuring that the organisation is the right fit for them.”
