10 Surprising Facts about the Northern Powerhouse

1) In 2015/16 inward investment in the Northern Powerhouse created 13,700 new jobs.
The number of inward investment projects was up almost a quarter, and this increased level of investment and growth has translated into more job opportunities in the Northern Powerhouse region.

2) If the Northern Powerhouse had competed at the 2012 Olympic Games it would have come 6th, ahead of Germany, France and Australia.
The Northern Powerhouse is home to a number of world class athletes such as Nicola Adams, Alistair and Jonny Brownlee and Jason Kenny who all gained international acclaim during the 2012 Olympics.

3) Enterprise Zones across the North have attracted around £1 million a day worth of investment.
Enterprise Zones provide government support and tax breaks for businesses that are new or expanding. These Northern Enterprise Zones have attracted £1.3 billion private investment which equates to £1 million a day.

4) £70 million has been allocated to the Northern Powerhouse Schools Strategy
The Northern Powerhouse Schools Strategy aims to challenge the gap in education between children growing up in the North and the South. In a government report it was found that children from poor backgrounds in the South were far more likely to gain good grades and go to university than children from poor backgrounds in the North. Investment in education in the Northern Powerhouse Region should help address this imbalance.


5) Leeds’ economy grew faster than London’s since the launch of the Northern Powerhouse
In a UK Powerhouse report it was shown that the economy of Leeds was up by 8% since the launch of the Northern Powerhouse strategy. London had grown by 6.9%. Seeing a Northern Powerhouse city outperform London for growth is a key signifier that the Northern Powerhouse project has been helping growth.

6) The Northern Powerhouse Region contains eight of Europe’s top 200 universities.
These eight universities have been working together as part of the N8. There was recently a Northern Powerhouse Education summit held at the University of Liverpool to discuss and coordinate action between these universities on tackling global issues. The N8 universities are – Durham, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester, Lancaster, York and Sheffield.

7) If the Northern Powerhouse was a country it would have the 10th largest economy in the EU worth £350 billion.
The Northern Powerhouse economy is continuing to grow and strengthen. Increased investment and regeneration efforts have made the North a much more profitable place to do business.

8) The first ever flight to San Francisco from the North was in 2017 and included a Northern Powerhouse delegation of tech leaders.
This trade delegation made up of top Northern Powerhouse tech companies was coordinated by MC2 I, supported by the Department for International Trade and the Institute of Directors and was in partnership with Virgin Atlantic and Manchester Airport.

9) Over £54.5 billion of goods were exported from the North in 2016, from 25,000 companies.
UK products remain attractive to an overseas market, and a number of popular UK manufacturing companies are based in the Northern Powerhouse region.

10) Over half of Britains best buy to let postcodes are in the Northern Powerhouse
In a recent study looking at the best buy to let postcodes in the UK for rental yields, over half of the postcodes were in the Northern Powerhouse. Liverpool’s L7 postcode was top, but Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield were all in the top 25 too.
