Dancing Girls removed as work progresses on Spanish City in Whitley Bay

The iconic Dancing Girls that stand above the Spanish City in Whitley Bay have been removed as regeneration work continues.

The copper statues, which have graced the top of the Grade II listed building for over a century, were taken down temporarily as work on the £36m restoration project picks up pace.

Robertson North East – a construction arm of the £450m turnover company Robertson – carried out the removal as part of its work on the development.

Commenting on the progress of the build, Robertson Project Manager, Andrew Coleman said: “The removal of the Dancing Girls is a clear sign that we are on track to complete the first phase of the regeneration work on time.

“These famous statues have looked over Whitley Bay for over a century and we have been extremely careful to not cause any damage when removing them. They will be back in their rightful place once construction work has been completed to form the new cupolas.”

The next part of the redevelopment project will see the new steel structure commence.

Robertson expects the first phase of work on the Spanish City Dome to be completed by spring 2018.
