The National College for High Speed Rail in Doncaster has picked up four leading accolades in less than one week at two prestigious awards ceremonies.
At the 2018 South Yorkshire and Humber LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Excellence Awards, the college was named ‘Best Educational Building’ and also beat every other entry at the competition to win the prestigious title ‘winner of winners’ at the award’s twelfth annual ceremony.
Just days later and beating fierce competition across the region – including The Albert Works Sheffield, Leeds College of Music, Sheffield Hallam Institute of Education & The Piece Hall/Calderdale Library – the college has achieved two further awards for ‘Overall Design’ and ‘Sustainability’ at the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Yorkshire & North East Awards ceremony in York.
These two awards recognise the college’s diverse array of architectural factors and its ‘Excellent’ BREEAM credit status (a British construction industry standard) respectively.
Clair Mowbray, chief executive of the National College for High Speed Rail, said: “These four awards are an incredible achievement for the college, especially given the relatively short space of time that our Doncaster campus has been open. Full credit is due to the architects of the building, Bond Bryan, as well as the main construction partner Wilmott Dixon.
“We’re incredibly proud of the building in Doncaster and of the positive learning environment that is being fostered for our students and staff here, as we train and prepare Britain’s next generation of rail engineers and technicians.”
The National College for High Speed Rail opened its doors in Doncaster last September and is one of the most exciting new learning institutions in the UK. The new awards make up a total of nine that the college has achieved to date since opening in Doncaster and Birmingham in September 2017.
The 2018 LABC South Yorkshire and Humber Awards recognise construction projects that have been undertaken and completed over the past twelve months in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield, Hull, and North & North East Lincolnshire.
The RIBA awards have been celebrating outstanding work for over 180 years and are regarded internationally as a mark of excellence, recognising the best architecture, architects, research and students.
