Fusco’s Celebrates 50 Years of Serving Fish And Chips in Whitby

Fusco’s of Whitby, the family-owned business behind four of Yorkshire’s top fish and chips restaurants and takeaways, is celebrating reaching an impressive 50 years in business in Whitby.

To mark the occasion, the Fusco family held a celebratory luncheon at the Royal Fisheries, the first of the company’s four fish and chip restaurants and takeaways, on Wednesday 23rd May.

Owner of Fusco’s of Whitby, Carol Fusco marked the occasion with a champagne reception and fish and chip lunch, followed by the cutting of the Golden anniversary cake. She was joined by Whitby Town Mayor, Rebecca Pearson, Ward Councillor Joseph Plant and the President of the National Federation of Fish Friers, Andrew Crook.

Carol Fusco comments: “We are proud to be one of Whitby’s longest established fish and chip businesses and we look forward to serving local residents and tourists to the area for the next five decades!

“We have some exciting plans for our restaurants in the coming months and are investing in refurbishing some of the premises and in establishing a new production unit. We therefore look forward to further growth and expansion in the area and would like to thank our staff and customers for all their support over the past 50 years.”

To celebrate 50 years since the company took over ownership of the Royal Fisheries, Fusco’s has launched a competition. Anyone that purchases a meal from the Royal Fisheries takeaway on any Friday from May 25th, will receive one of 3,000 scratch cards with the chance to win a meal for four in the restaurant, plus other prizes.

Carol adds: “As well as five decades in business, it’s also half a century since we purchased our first restaurant, the Royal Fisheries. So we wanted to mark the anniversary by giving something back to our customers, as way of thanks for their continued loyalty.”

Fusco’s Fish and Chips was founded in 1956 by Violet and Dennis Fusco. The family made a bold move to Whitby in 1968, purchased Royal Fisheries and launched Fusco’s of Whitby. Peter and Carol Fusco took over the business from Peter’s parents in 1979.

Twenty years later the company invested in a second outlet, Quayside, which is run by Stuart Fusco. In April 2013 it became the first fish and chip shop in Yorkshire to get the prestigious Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) stamp of approval that the fish it serves is sustainably sourced.

Quayside was crowned the winner of the National Fish and Chips Awards in 2014. More recently it was also awarded a place on Fry Magazine’s list of the UK’s Top Ten Fish and Chip Restaurants in March 2018.
Fish Box Whitby, a one of kind ‘express style’ fish and chip shop, with takeaway seating inside and out, launched in 2013; with Fish Box Robin Hood’s Bay opening just three years later.

In 2015 Fusco’s of Whitby also invested in the Whitby Fish and Chips Catering Trailer, a mobile high capacity catering unit designed to produce exceptional quality fish and chips in any location.
