SDA Architects, a commercial architectural practice, has donated £1,000 to The Alzhemier’s Society.
The donation has been made to congratulate staff member, Barry Cole, who has successfully completed the Ironman challenge.
Barry, an associate at the practice based in Leeds, has been training for over 3 months for the Ironman challenge. The event took place in Bolton on the 17th of July and is considered one of the world’s most difficult sporting events. It consists of a 2.4-mile open water swim, a 112-mile cycle ride and a marathon, all completed in succession.
Barry also asked colleagues to sponsor him to give up cake in the months running up to the event, a challenge he states, “nearly matched that of the Ironman!” due to the amount of cake which can usually be found in the office.
The donation from SDA Architects matches Barry’s own fundraising total of £1,050, meaning £2,050 will be donated to The Alzheimer’s Society overall. Speaking on the donation from SDA, Barry said: “The donation really means a lot to me. My father-in-law died of Alzhemier’s Disease in April 2009 and he is sadly missed by all our family. I’ve completed the challenge in memory of him and my parents Rita and Tom.”
Barry continued: “Alzheimer’s Disease desperately needs more funding and I hope the money I raise will help other families currently dealing with this horrendous disease.”
Anthony Henson, Director at SDA said: “We’re more than happy to support Barry in his challenge. We can’t imagine how difficult the challenge was, but we can see that he worked very hard for it. All of our team will be offering Barry cake in the office on his return, as we’re all proud of him.”
