Sheffield dental lab ‘champions’ bespoke sports mouthguards

A Sheffield-based dental laboratory is helping to kit out sporting stars by offering bespoke and customised mouthguards to add personality to necessary safety equipment.

Archformbyte, which produces a range of orthodontic products including snoring aids and its transparent C-Thru aligners, has produced a range of mouthguards for sports people which can be as plain or as eye-catching as the customer wants. This can include flags, team colours, or glitter effects.

Many sports, including cricket, boxing, ice hockey, roller hockey, and martial arts, require participants to wear mouthguards as part of their safety equipment. These are made to measure for the sportsperson, and require different thicknesses for different sports.

Although many dental firms offer mouthguards, most don’t have a customisable option. General and specialist dental practice Smile NW recently used the service after running into difficulty with another provider, which couldn’t supply a mouthguard without branding across the front.

Dr Veronica Morris, Principal Owner of Smile NW, said: “One of my clients is a professional in the field of martial arts. He needed a mouthguard that didn’t have any branding on, as this could have caused him to be heavily fined by his sponsors. The other company wouldn’t supply him with a plain mouthguard, but I was able to order one through Archformbyte. This was exactly what my client needed.

“The turnaround was very quick and efficient, and the communication was great. A technician called me to double check some of the specifications, and I had the mouthguard within a few days.”

Pennie Hudson Ward, Chief Executive of Archformbyte, said: “We were happy to help Dr Morris and her client to get the mouthguard they needed. We understand that, when competing at a professional level, the relationship a sportsperson has with their sponsors is incredibly important, and they wouldn’t want to jeopardise that in any way.

“We also appreciate that a mouthguard is necessary safety equipment for many sports people, and sometimes they want something special that matches their kit, or is in their team colours. We love the thought of UK sports people dazzling their opponents with a bespoke mouthguard.”
