Open to All – Telcom Group launches a free coding school and bootcamp in Bolton
Telcom Group today launched their not for profit, free coding school. ‘Recode’ will launch first
in Bolton with 500 students nationally set to benefit over the next three years. The coding
school will be a drop in facility for anyone wishing to find out about coding, offering some
potential students the opportunity of a place on a three month intensive coding bootcamp.
These intensive bootcamp’s will equip students with the skills they need to compete for future
employment in the digital sector. The first class of 2019 will be open to budding coders from any background with no previous experience of coding necessary.
Recode will offer the first cohort, a range of tools, that give participants from any walk of life the opportunity to become proficient in HTML, CSS and Javascript, and so the ability to develop software and websites. During the course ‘Recoder’s’ will be equipped with skills to boost their career options in a range of sectors and unlock a world of creativity and potential.
The goal is to give local people in Greater Manchester and beyond the opportunity to
experience high quality coding teaching, that might otherwise be out of reach financially,
giving them the skills that are so desperately needed in all sectors.
Co-CEOs Shaun Gibson and Doug Ward of Telcom Group, said “As a business we are

Just as we see internet provision as the fourth utility, we feel coding is a basic skill which all adults need to operate in the changing employment landscape.
These skills are in high demand and the ability to write and understand code are fast becoming an essential skill for any job or career pathway. We are already providing high quality connectivity solutions for customers nationally and are fundamentally committed to opening up the opportunities that come hand in hand with access to ubiquitous ultrafast fibre. We recognise that it is not just about having fast internet, it’s about what you do with that fast internet once you have it. We hope Recode will be a catalyst for people in Bolton and across the UK to experience the opportunities training in coding can open up for them. We want to set an example to other corporates, that we all have a social responsibility to take action and give as we grow’.
Creators of Recode Kirsty Devlin and Anna Holland-Smith had both experienced significant
benefits since graduating from coding bootcamps and wanted to make coding accessible to all.
Kirsty Devlin, Recode Programme Leader added – ‘Now Telcom have agreed to be headline
sponsors of this initiative we have the springboard needed to grow this exponentially. As a
Bolton girl, I jumped at the chance to give something back to the community. The people of Bolton are going to be the first to benefit from Recode and I know they will be great advocates for the programme as we roll it out across Greater Manchester and then nationally over the next couple of years’.
