A gin produced in the village containing the longest place name in the UK could soon be heading to Manchester’s bar and restaurants.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch on Anglesey in North Wales is home to Llanfairpwll Distillery, which creates craft sprits.
And the company is showcasing its products at the Northern Restaurant and Bar show to encourage the region’s caterers to stock its products.
The village’s name, often shortened to Llanfair PG, is printed on the bottle’s label. Fortunately for customers, and bartenders, they will be able to refer to the drink as Llanfair PGin, unless of course they wish to order a Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch gin and tonic.
Rob Laming, who co-founded the distillery with his partner Maria, said: “People constantly look for new ways to have gin, whether it’s the flavour of the spirit itself or by using a different mixer.
“While we do offer a variety of gin flavours, the fact that it is the world’s longest named gin adds an extra layer of curiosity and intrigue.
“More importantly, of course, is the taste. The fact it is stocked across Wales speaks volumes for the quality of the drink and we’re confident it will be a hit in Manchester’s lively bar and restaurant scene.”
Llanfairpwll Distillery uses botanicals grown on Anglesey in all of its gins, and is also releasing a spiced rum, called Swellies Spiced, at the Northern Restaurant and Bar show.
The gin maker is exhibiting there alongside other Welsh food and drink producers on the Cywain stand. Cywain is a food and drink business support service, which is a Menter a Busnes project funded by the Welsh Government.
It provides fully funded support and helps food and drink growth companies to create jobs, increase sales, and enter new markets
The other exhibitors are Maggie’s Exotic Foods, which produces spice rubs and chilli sauces, Dovecote Brewery, which creates craft ales and gins, Shire Meadery, which manufactures mead, Grandma’s Cupboard, which produces vodka, rum and gin-based liqueurs, and Tast Natur, which creates foraged and home-grown botanical syrups.
The Northern Restaurant and Bar show takes place on 19 and 20 March at Manchester Central.
