Trustee training for charities in Newcastle, Harrogate and Manchester

Trustee Training

Hempsons, leading national law firm for the charity and social enterprise sectors, is to run a series of free trustee training workshops this autumn, designed to help charity trustees, and also chief executives, to understand the responsibilities of trustees and the demarcation of roles between them and the chief executive.

Ian Hempseed, head of charities and social enterprise at Hempsons, explains: “With the continuing intense scrutiny of charities, it is essential that boards do not treat governance as a tick box exercise but have genuine oversight of their charity’s activities and ensure they have the tools to do so.”

The programme will cover:

  • Setting the scene with the Charity Commission’s current regulatory approach and recent guidance, and the new Charity Governance Code, the workshop will explore the need for trustees to take responsibility for their organisation
    • The legal duties and responsibilities of charity trustees, looking at board effectiveness and its role, how this role relates to the work of the chief executive, conflicts of interest, decision-making, minute taking and delegation to chief executives and committees
    • Trustees’ responsibilities for both external and internal financial reporting, examining key areas such as the different types of funds and how they can be spent and the linking of reserves policy to strategy.

The aim of the workshops will be to give practical tips to help delegates improve governance.

Hempsons’ free trustee training workshops will take place in Harrogate, Manchester, London and Newcastle from 20th September to 5th October 2017, and delegates can choose between start times of 9.45am or 2.15pm.
