UK’s first Emergency Services QUAD station complete

Construction work has been completed by Robertson North East England on the £3.5m Barnard Castle Emergency Services QUAD station.

The UK’s first emergency services quad station, which is located on the previous Barnard Castle fire station, will house the local fire, police, mountain rescue and ambulance service.

Garry Hope, Managing Director of Robertson North East England, said: “Robertson is honoured to have worked on such a unique and important building. The new station will revolutionise how the emergency services operate in the local area and we’re proud to have been a part of the project.

“The innovative techniques used by the team have enabled Robertson to enhance the built environment, whilst still producing a high class facility.”

Robertson’s sympathetic approach to the neighbouring community enabled it to complete the structure with minor disruption to the building’s surroundings.

During construction, Robertson used an advanced transfer slab solution that supports the ground beams and avoids pressure being surcharged on the ground.

The building itself is composed of the main, three storey office building, masonry stores and a training building.

The unique station will now be home to the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, Barnard Castle Police, the North East Ambulance Service and the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team.

The new multi-use emergency services facility is located in close proximity to the homes of the retained fire fighters.

This modern approach is expected to revolutionise the way the emergency services collaborate, as well as improving services overall.
