Yorkshire chemical company supports school library design competition

A West Yorkshire school has celebrated International School Library Month with its partners at its neighbouring chemical company.

Airedale Chemical, based in Cross Hills, joined forces with pupils from Sutton in Craven Community Primary School to mark the special month aimed at honouring the importance of school libraries.

Children were invited to design a poster for the science section of the school library to highlight the pleasure and knowledge that school libraries offer pupils.

The winners had their designs made into a poster, framed and displayed in the school library and each winner received a WH Smith gift voucher.

Mr Dave Horton, teacher at Sutton in Craven Community Primary School, said: “Our school library is an invaluable resource for us and provides hours of fun, learning and quiet time for pupils throughout each year. So when Airedale Chemical suggested a competition to celebrate this fantastic facility, we jumped at the chance.

“The pupils thoroughly enjoyed creating eye-catching posters with a science theme and for the winners to see their drawings blown-up and hung on the wall is a great boost for them.”

Earlier this year, Airedale Chemical donated £500 of science books to the school’s library as part of its charitable arm Airedale Foundation which supports local community groups.

Daniel Marr, head of marketing at Airedale Chemical, added: “We were blown away by the creativity and imagination the pupils. They really took the science theme and ran with it to create some fantastic posters for their library to celebrate International School Library Month.

“It was hard to pick just three winners but the chosen designs were fantastic. Not only were they well-drawn but they expressed a real knowledge and love of science.

“Over the last couple of years we have really enjoyed our partnership with the school and competitions like this definitely help strengthen the bond between us.”

Poppy won the year one to two group with her striking design and use of the Airedale Chemical logo. The winner of years three and four was Harry and featured the test tubes in the poster, while the winner of the older age group, Simeon, used his knowledge of astronomy to create his image.
