A scheme to empower young people has been launched by a North Eastl charity.

#Motiv8ed is a programme developed by Tees Valley YMCA to support agencies in Darlington that are working with young people, particularly those in need of early help and intervention and those at risk. Staff will provide a range of workshops and activities to improve the prospects of young people and steer them away from negative behaviors.

The scheme draws on the strengths and skills of young people to help them navigate some of the challenges they may face, and to help tackle past experiences of trauma, family breakdown, homelessness and exclusion. The skills they learn will also enable them to become more resilient to any challenges they face in the future.

A similar scheme is currently running in the wider Tees Valley area, and has received positive feedback from those who have taken part.

Matthew Connolly, pastoral intervention co-ordinator at Acklam Grange School, said: “We ran anger management sessions with our most challenging pupils and the level of engagement from them was a pleasant surprise to all the staff involved.

“Most pupils have said they have implemented the strategies suggested in daily life and feel they are able to manage their emotions better.”

It is anticipated that the Darlington programme will support 400 children and young people in its first year.

Tees Valley YMCA has provided supported accommodation for young people since 1993, as well as offering community-based services across the region.
