Bradford health business targets growth following McKesson UK deal

A fast-growing Bradford-based company that supplies GP practices with pharmacists has been acquired by McKesson UK, for an undisclosed sum.

Prescribing Support Services (PSS) provides a fully managed pharmacist-led service which supports practices with a cost-effective way to help meet patient workloads and manage medicine related activity. Established in 2000 it has worked with CCGs and practices to implement an evidence-based approach to achieving the best outcomes from the investment in medicines.

The company recently moved to a new head office in Shipley and the deal will support further ambitious growth plans.

Through the combination of PSS and McKesson UK the company is able to provide a fully managed pharmacist-led service model, which supports practices with a cost-effective solution to address practice workload associated with managing medicines and related activity.

PSS also operates Optimed Healthcare, a specialist division to work in partnership with the NHS and the commercial sector to reduce variation, improve quality and deliver efficiency savings. Optimed will complement McKesson’s business by broadening the scope of services offered.

Mohammed Nazir, CEO at PSS: “Hentons provided outstanding support throughout the deal process to both parties. We are looking forward to a positive year of growth in 2019 as part of McKesson UK.”

Results Healthcare and Hentons advised the deal. Hentons operates a large specialist medical team that supports hundreds of GPs and associated businesses.

Simon Gray, partner at Hentons, said: “PSS has grown rapidly by helping the NHS work more flexibly and efficiently. It has created a patient-focused model that meets this requirement. Having grown tenfold in recent years to support 250 GP practices around the UK, this deal will help take the business to the next level.”

PSS is the largest employer of primary care pharmacists in the UK and is recruiting to meet demand. It currently employs 150 in a mixture of directly employed and contract roles.

McKesson UK operates the largest community pharmacy network in the UK and is a leading national pharmaceutical distributor. With around 25,000 employees it supports over 1,800 pharmacies with services for medicines manufacturers through to individual patients in the community.
