Helix Arts is proud to announce its 40th anniversary celebration, heralding a new chapter in its storied history with a series of captivating person-centred events. Commencing on Thursday, March 21, 2024, and culminating in a vibrant public festival on Saturday, March 23, 2024, this milestone occasion promises an exhilarating fusion of exhibitions, films, performances, and workshops.

As a trailblazer in social, environmental, and critical arts practices, Helix Arts has long been committed to regional engagement. Originating in Sunderland, the organisation later moved to Newcastle before finding its current abode in North Shields in 2017.

Undergoing a name change in 2000 to become Helix Arts, the organisation has steadfastly championed collaborative, interdisciplinary arts initiatives, fostering dialogue and co-creation between communities and artists that creates change and promotes equity, diversity and everyday creativity.

Over four decades, Helix Arts has amassed a distinguished body of work spanning diverse art forms and societal issues. Cheryl Gavin, Director of Helix Arts, reflects on this rich legacy: “Our journey has taught us invaluable lessons from our past. As we celebrate our heritage and legacy, we’re drawing inspiration from our extensive archive to shape our present and future endeavours.”

Thanks to generous support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Helix Arts will open its seminal archive to the public, inviting visitors to delve into its remarkable history. Cheryl Gavin adds, “We eagerly anticipate commemorating our past, present, and future in our new home at the heart of North Shields’ exciting Cultural Quarter in the building that was once the town’s Mechanics Institute and Free Library. It’s a great base to work with communities and artists across the North East!”
