Hold the parmesan, but only for a short while! After nearly four decades, Huddersfield restaurant closes for refurbishment

After nearly 40 years in business hugely successful Italian restaurant Da Sandro’s in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire are temporarily closing for a short time whilst they undertake an exciting refurbishment of their restaurant premises.

Da Sandro was opened in 1981 by renowned late local businessman Marino Bevilacqua and his son Sandro. Marino came to the UK in 1950 as a penniless 18 year old to work in the mines in Wales. He went on to become a respected and truly entrepreneurial figure who employed hundreds of people through his various businesses including Continental Wine & Food, Prego Italian Restaurant , the Waterfront Hotel and Briar Court Hotel. His desire to bring Italian food to Yorkshire has proved to be his legacy with his son Sandro, daughter Lidia and granddaughter Natasha continuing to run the restaurants.

The eatery has established itself as one of the integral parts of the local dining scene in its nearly four decades of trading. As many restaurants struggle to survive in the changing economic climate, including many mid range chains backed by celebrity chefs, it’s refreshing and reassuring that true, authentic family run local restaurants continue to thrive.

Improvements planned include an update of the kitchen area, works within the restaurant and a new look for the busy and sociable bar area.

Methodical planning and consultation has gone into the process to ensure that whilst the restaurant will be much improved, there will be no loss of the ambience that has come to be associated with the establishment. The variety and standard of Italian cuisine, staff and the warm welcome to all ages will remain exactly as it has always been.

Sandro Bevilacqua, explains:

“ Da Sandro’s means so many things to so many people. People come to dine with us for lunch, dinner, anniversaries, birthday celebrations to family and friends gathering to meet. Many of our customers are now 3rd generation and it is hugely important to us as a family to build on the legacy of the last 37 years.

The time feels right to invest in the dining experience for our customers and for the future of Da Sandro’s but in a sympathetic modernisation which will not detract from the ambience we have become synonymous with or in a way that would alienate our customers. We will remain casual and relaxed for those wanting to dine informally whilst appealing to those celebrating a special occasion.
We are really very excited about the changes and would stress that everything our clientele love about us will be back in a short time. In the meantime the Briar Court hotel and function room will remain open as normal and residents of the hotel of the site will be able to dine from a limited Da Sandros menu and some of the staff will be working at our sister restaurant Prego in Brighouse, you can always come and see us there!
We will be communicating regular updates on the project through our various media channels too so we can stay in touch with everyone”.

The last day before the temporary closure will be the Sunday 13th May, 2018 and the restaurant expects to be closed for approximately 6 weeks. You can keep up to date with all the latest on the project through social media including twitter and Facebook and the website.
