An iconic art deco building in Sheffield’s Attercliffe area is to go up for auction this month.
The imposing former Burtons store on Attercliffe Road, which covers 6,000 sq ft across three floors and was built in the early 1930s, will be included in an online property auction held by Sheffield auctioneer Mark Jenkinson, part of Eddisons, on 24 April. The landmark property, which has many original art deco features, has been given a £350,000 guide price.
Adrian Little of Mark Jenkinson said: “Historically, Burtons had a huge presence in Sheffield, with the company’s headquarters and five tailoring shops here by 1913. Attercliffe Road alone had two Burtons stores and this iconic building is well known as a striking gateway to Sheffield for people coming into the city from junction 34 of the M1.
“The property has been through several different identities since its time as a Burtons shop and it would be fantastic if a buyer could be found to give the building a new lease of life and create another asset for this up-and-coming area of the city.”
Nearby to the former Burtons store, located on the corner of Vicarage Road and Attercliffe Road, the former Banner department store, also built in the 1930s, was acquired by developer Citu at the end of last year. The firm has also submitted plans for a 1,000-home residential development, Attercliffe Waterside, less than a mile from the Burtons store site.
“There’s no doubt this area of the city is seeing some really positive developments and this has definitely increased interest in this unique old building from investors who can see its potential,” added Mr Little.
Next month’s auction, which includes the former Burtons store at 783-787 Attercliffe Road in Sheffield, along with around 100 other properties and plots of land, has new lots added daily and will be held on 24 April.
