The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East has released a shortlist of pioneering projects to be recognised at its annual Robert Stephenson Awards 2019.
A total of 13 projects from the region have been shortlisted in the awards programme across three categories, with the winners being revealed during a glittering award ceremony on 2 May.
Small – projects valued at less than £5million
- New Mills Road retaining wall, in Newcastle
- River Leven erosion protection, in Stockton
- Stranton Cemetery drainage, in Hartlepool
- Seaham Sewage Treatment Works Inlet works upgrade, in Seaham
• ORE Catapult, Blyth Dock 3 Gate Renewal, in Blyth
Medium – projects valued between £1million and £5million
- Haltwhistle flood alleviation scheme, in Northumberland
- Monkton flood alleviation scheme, in South Tyneside
- Whitley Bay central promenade coastal protection works, in Whitley Bay
- Howdon Sewage Treatment Works Blowers, in North Tyneside
Large – projects with a total cost in excess of £5million
- Middlehaven Dock Priestman Bridge and Road, in Middlesbrough
- Hartlepool Headland coastal defences, in Hartlepool
- East Tanfield Sewage Treatment Works upgrade, in County Durham
- Greatham South flood alleviation scheme, in Middlesbrough
ICE North East presents the Robert Stephenson Awards every year as a celebration of civil engineering excellence in the region.
The awards, sponsored by CDM, ensure projects receive the acknowledgement and prestige they deserve. The results are announced at the annual dinner and awards are presented by the ICE president.
Awards are made to recognise particular merit, physical achievement, innovation or ingenuity. Projects can include research work, technical papers or built infrastructure.
In 2018 Blyth Offshore Demonstrator Windfarm Project won the large category, the medium category was won by Castle Eden Dene Outfall, and the small award was won by the Cobalt cycle scheme.
Entertainment, food and drinks will all be on the agenda at the black-tie event, at Grand Hotel Gosforth Park, Newcastle, on May 2, sponsored by CMD.
