Mark Lumley, Partner at Shulmans LLP, has been named the 2017 Data Protection Lawyer of the Year at the FinTech Awards.

The national awards acknowledge and reward the individuals, firms, start-ups and banks who are recognised as thought leaders in their area of expertise. With more than 20 years of legal experience, Mark specialises in IT, data protection and cyber regulatory compliance in a commercial context.

Recent developments in data protection laws in both the UK and EU mean data protection compliance is now a major priority for global businesses as they continue to handle the personal information of customers and contacts.

On receiving the award, Mark said: “It is an honour to be named the FinTech Awards Data Protection Lawyer of the Year. The next 12 months represent a once in a generation legal and regulatory change in the data protection arena, providing greater control for individuals over the use businesses can make of data. This will significantly increase the complexity of managing data, data processes and policies and legal compliance.

“There is significant change to manage in the coming months in readiness for GDPR and the Shulmans team, with its in-depth understanding of technology, data, compliance and good business process, is currently working with companies to help achieve compliance.  In doing so, organisations will be able to achieve an element of future-proofing, as the UK adjusts to accommodate Brexit, whilst also ensuring compliance when GDPR comes into effect in May 2018.”
