Scarborough market completes extensive renovation
The historic Scarborough market has completed an extensive renovation to secure its future. Esh Group undertook the £2.7m project on behalf of Scarborough Borough Council with funding support from the Coastal Communities Fund.
Market traders and shoppers will benefit from the redevelopment of the main market hall and the construction of new trading units.  A new mezzanine upper floor was also completed.
The people of Scarborough have been shopping for food and produce at the town’s  traditional Yorkshire style indoor market since 1853, in St Helen’s Square, where products ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, homemade pies and freshly baked bread are available.
Stuart Leslie, divisional director at Esh, said: “The extensive redevelopment of Scarborough’s historic market will play an important part in the future of the town’s long-term vision. The work was undertaken sympathetically to allow tenants to trade throughout the project. The new market is a great destination for tourists and locals all year round.”
The redevelopment is creating a fresh and modern market that retains the authentic character and history of the building. It will be the destination to go to buy fresh local produce as well as more unusual, unique gifts, jewellery, crafts, clothes and collectables.
Esh Group directly employs over 1,000 people in everything from civil engineering and building to commercial and residential property development.
