Teesside apprentice is a cut above as Yarm hairdressers makes family appointment

Northern Skills Group is helping a Yarm hairdressers open doors for young people as the granddaughter of its founder joins the team during its 50th anniversary.

With exciting plans for expansion for her salon, Diana Khan, owner of HairFayre, welcomed her granddaughter Charlotte Roach to join her busy team of stylists as a hairdressing apprentice.

After previously qualifying as a beautician, Charlotte soon discovered her passion truly lied in hairdressing and decided to follow in the footsteps of her grandmother embarking on a Level 2 Hairdressing apprenticeship with Northern Skills Group.

Founded in 1968, the salon is a popular choice for many locals and offers an extensive range of hair and beauty treatments. By studying for her apprenticeship at the salon, Charlotte is able to learn industry-specific skills such as colouring and styling within a real-working environment. While the salon will assist with on-the-job development, Northern Skills Group supports theory-based learning using their dedicated facilities at Middlesbrough College.

Since it was launched in 2016, Northern Skills Group, the training arm of Middlesbrough College, has developed a broad curriculum of apprenticeships in more than 21 sectors, including business admin, dentistry, engineering and customer service.

Charlotte said: “I’m happy I chose the apprenticeship route, as workplace experience will really benefit my hair and beauty career. The encouragement I have received from my grandmother, in addition to the support from Northern Skills Group assessors, has really boosted my confidence when adopting new skills and techniques.”

Diana Khan, Manager at HairFayre, credits her granddaughter’s commitment and professionalism.
She explained: “Charlotte has joined the team at a very exciting time for HairFayre as we celebrate our 50th birthday. Her talent and enthusiasm is brilliant for the business and I’m really pleased that, through the apprenticeship route, Charlotte will help keep Hair Fayre in the family.”

Paul Graham, Director of Apprenticeship Development at Northern Skills Group, said: “Northern Skills Group strives to support learners from a wide range of backgrounds develop their knowledge and abilities through on-the-job learning. Charlotte has demonstrated a clear passion for hair and beauty, and we are delighted to help her achieve her goals and for HairFayre to develop as a family business.”
