WSP Director seconded to UK Green Building Council to support Mayor’s green city agenda

WSP Technical Director Simon Clouston

WSP’s Technical Director of Sustainability & Energy Simon Clouston has been seconded to the UK Green Building Council to support its strategy across Greater Manchester.

UKGBC’s ambitions to significantly grow its presence in the Greater Manchester region have been boosted by Clouston’s secondment from the engineering and professional services consultancy’s Manchester office. He will be working as part of the organisation’s new Local Network in the city. This appointment comes hot on the heels of Metro Mayor Andy Burnham’s commitment to make Manchester one of the leading green cities in Europe.

Earlier this year, UKGBC acted as the buildings’ lead for the Greater Manchester Green Summit, providing insight on the unique challenges and opportunities for green buildings in the region. The UKGBC team is now assisting in the development of the Combined Authority’s 5 Year Environment Strategy and Spatial Planning Framework.

Clouston explained: “I’m delighted to be part of UKGBC at this crucial time of development for the region. We will be working hard and supporting the development of a 5-year action plan that can start delivering on the commitments that came out of the first Mayor’s Green Summit earlier this year. These include Greater Manchester to be zero carbon city by 2038.”

As part of the expansion, UKGBC’s Director of Policy and Places, John Alker, has also relocated from London to Manchester to spearhead the organisation’s activities in the region.

He added: “I’m looking forward to what UKGBC can achieve in Greater Manchester, helping to forge a shared vision between progressive construction and property companies, policy makers and other partners locally.”

Clouston will also be working with Hilson Moran’s Principal Sustainability Consultant, Joanne Thetford, another key secondee to the Network.
