GMI Construction Group has started preparatory works on the long-awaited renovation of Huddersfield’s Grade II* listed George Hotel, paving the way for its transformation into a flagship hospitality destination and the first Radisson RED hotel in Yorkshire and the Humber.
The historic building, which has stood vacant since 2013, will be redeveloped into a contemporary 108-room hotel complete with bar, restaurant, gym and conference facilities. Once complete, it will be operated by Radisson Hotel Group, marking a significant regional debut for the Radisson RED brand.
GMI has been closely involved throughout the design stage, working alongside Kirklees Council – which acquired the building in August 2020 – and other key stakeholders to strike the right balance between heritage preservation and long-term commercial viability.
Revised plans for the scheme were approved in October 2025 as part of the Huddersfield Blueprint regeneration programme, with main construction works set to begin later this month.
The development will preserve the hotel’s historic stone façade and distinctive frontage on St Georges Square, maintaining its status as a gateway building into the town centre. To the rear, two new set-back storeys of accommodation will be added, designed to complement the original architecture while delivering high-quality, modern space.
The project combines contemporary construction methods with careful heritage restoration, supporting wider regeneration ambitions for Huddersfield town centre.
Preparatory works are now underway, including the installation of extended hoardings along John William Street to enable scaffolding works. Dismantling works will soon begin on the west side of the structure.
