Insurance Institute of Leeds names Leeds Mind as chosen charity

Reducing stigma and discrimination: Leeds Mind chief executive, Helen Kemp, with IIL president, James Ramirez.

The Insurance Institute of Leeds (IIL) has nominated Leeds Mind – which supports those with mental health difficulties – as its local charity.

The Institute’s new president James Ramirez, MD of Harrogate-based Aria Insurance Solutions, made the appointment as part of a series of new developments for 2018.
One of the country’s oldest professional institutes, IIL was established in 1888 to promote continuous professional development to members. It also provides fundraising and networking activities.

A champion of supporting local charities, the Institute’s fundraising events across 2018 have included a “World Cup Countries” fancy dress fundraiser. On September 29, James and fellow members will tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for, and boost awareness of, Leeds Mind.

Said James: “One in four people experience mental health difficulties at some point during their life .The work of Leeds Mind, which provides wide-ranging services including counselling, group therapy and employment support, is invaluable and inspirational.”

Helen Kemp, chief executive of Leeds Mind, said: “We are delighted that the Insurance Institute of Leeds has chosen us as its charity of the year and we look forward to working alongside James and the Institute’s members. Without this type of support, we wouldn’t be able to deliver our vital services to the people of Leeds and we can’t say thank you enough.”

Leeds Mind aims to reduce stigma and discrimination associated with mental health. The charity helps people with mental health difficulties to overcome obstacles, flourish – and have more control of their lives.
