Jobs growth for Leeds data services business

Leeds-based data services company, The Data Shed, is set for rapid growth after a series of clients wins. The firm grew from 10 members of staff to 22 in 2017 and is now set to take on another 10 people after a successful start to 2018.

Set up in 2014 by Anna Sutton and Ed Thewlis and based in Mabgate Mills, the firm provides bespoke data consultancy services to a range of local and international clients.

Commenting on the growth, Anna said:

“As two Yorkshire-born entrepreneurs, ourselves the children of entrepreneurs, we’re really proud to be building a fast-growing company in Leeds, offering interesting roles to skilled digital professionals. Our recent growth has come on the back of new clients as well as further projects from existing clients.”

“We are also planning further growth over the next twelve months. Having grown organically, without having to take outside investment, allows us to develop the company in the right way alongside our clients.”

Ed explained a key reason for recent client wins:

“One of our major skills is building up a consolidated view of a person from many sources of data, which is a combination of extensive customer behavioural insight and machine learning. In particular, it helps to identify individuals by linking and matching their behaviour, allowing businesses to better serve and manage their customers.

We use a lot of maths in our work, but we’re really a creative data consultancy that works with our clients to enhance their capabilities. We’re also technology agnostic, so we tailor solutions that are best for the client, and use the most appropriate technology.”

The Data Shed’s growth follows the general growth of digital in the Leeds city region. A recent Tech Nation report showed that there are now over 34,000 digital tech jobs in Leeds with a 138% increase in the number of digital firms.

Roger Marsh OBE, chair of the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership said:

“It’s great to see the growth of The Data Shed, another successful digital company to be founded and grown in the Leeds City Region. Anna and Ed are developing high quality jobs which contributes to the attractiveness of the city region for overseas companies looking to base their digital operations”.
