Moody Logistics and Storage has expanded its cross-deck loading facility in response to a three-fold increase in palletised freight volumes.
The Cramlington-based, family-run logistics firm has added 3,500 sq ft to its operation at Bolam Business Park, taking the total cross-deck footprint from 12,500 sq ft to 16,000 sq ft.
The investment enables the business to manage significantly higher throughput while maintaining safe and efficient operations, as demand for palletised distribution continues to rise.
Additional capacity has been created by integrating a separate storage area into the cross-deck facility. Internal walls have been removed, the layout reconfigured and two additional warehouse doors installed, improving flow and ensuring all loading activity remains under cover.
The expanded layout also provides headroom for further growth as freight volumes continue to increase.
The cross-deck facility, which opened in late 2017, plays a central role in the company’s operations. It allows goods to be unloaded, sorted by destination and rapidly reloaded onto delivery vehicles, reducing reliance on long-term storage and improving efficiency across the network.
Growth in pallet volumes reflects both the company’s strengthening position within national pallet networks and wider structural shifts in the UK logistics sector, including increased e-commerce activity and demand for cost-efficient distribution models.

Managing director Caroline Moody said: “We’ve experienced a three-fold increase in palletised freight in recent years. When our cross-deck facility first opened, we were handling just over 100 pallets daily, a figure that has now risen to around 350 pallets.
“It was increasingly challenging to manage that volume within the existing space, so we increased capacity to ensure the environment remains safe for the team operating forklifts and loading vehicles.
“We’re extremely proud of our cross-deck facility because everything can be loaded under cover, an important factor in maintaining the integrity of our customers’ freight and ensuring goods move quickly, safely and securely through our network.”
