Combat inactivity and kick-start the journey to a healthier you

Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Gym in Gosforth

Finding the motivation to exercise and change your lifestyle can be a daunting challenge.

Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Gym in Gosforth aims to offer a helping hand through its Seven Day Trial & Mini Health MOT.

Gym manager, Howard Williams, explains the reason behind it: “We all make excuses as to why we don’t want to exercise – we’re too tired or too busy and tell ourselves we’ll do it tomorrow.

“If you find you’re starting do this every day, how can you find the motivation to start or get back into it and stick with your fitness goals? At Nuffield we look at health differently, by challenging the way people think about and manage their lifestyle as a whole, in order to help them to discover and understand how to reach their long-term fitness goals.

“Physical inactivity is now the fourth largest cause of death and disability in the UK. And people with high levels of sedentary time have been found to have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

“Through our free seven day health and fitness trial, we aim to demonstrate to people that one week is all you need to start making steps towards improved physical and emotional health.”

In addition to the gym, swim and physio facilities at Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Gym, there are more than 80 classes per week, including Spin, Yoga, Pilates, Aqua Fit, Metafit, Tai Chi, Body Bump and Body Balance.

Howard adds: “It’s hugely important for every person to be the best version of themselves. We all know that long periods of physical inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle can lead to a number of long term health conditions.

“It’s good that awareness is growing with the help of high profile national campaigns like this month’s ‘Walk to Work Day’ and ‘On Your Feet Britain’, which are urging people to sit less and move more.

“However, it remains a common misconception that if you keep fit with an hour or so exercise a day, you’re healthy. But while taking time to exercise every day supports overall wellbeing, the effects of being inactive throughout the day can’t be reversed by exercise, so it’s essential to move regularly, around every half hour. This includes simply moving from sitting to standing.

“At Nuffield Health, we would encourage everyone, regardless of age or ability to make little changes to their day, such as taking a short walk around the office every hour, using the stairs instead of the lift, trying a new fitness class with a friend or walking to work. And if you’re still unsure where to start, get in touch to arrange a free trial and book a health MOT, we’ll use it to create a personalised action plan to help you reach your goals.”

Nuffield Health is the UK’s largest independent not-for-profit health and wellbeing provider. Within Tyne and Wear, the organisation runs Nuffield Newcastle Hospital in Jesmond and its Fitness & Wellbeing Gym in Gosforth.
