Planning has been approved for a new 20,000 sq ft Aldi store set to be built on land close to the AJ Bell Stadium, owned by CosCos, a joint-venture between Peel L&P and Salford City Council.
The German food industry giant will create 50 jobs in Salford, accompanying the existing home of Sale Sharks and Salford Red Devils as well as the Greene King family restaurant, Barley Farm.
David Glover, Director at CosCos said: “The arrival of Aldi is the continuation of the exciting regeneration at the AJ Bell Stadium, which is part of our City Gateway destination. The Aldi store will increase convenience for local shoppers and visually enhance the overall offer and experience at the AJ Bell Stadium that will also help attract other retail and leisure operators to this location.”
The new store development proposal will also include improved pedestrian access in the area and 115 car parking spaces. With convenient traffic connections and close proximity to intu Trafford Centre and TraffordCity, City Gateway is quickly turning into a go to destination for business. The site also neighbours Peel L&P’s £138 million Port Salford development, the UK’s first tri-modal inland waterway port, which will bring 154,000 sq metres of distribution warehousing, a new rail link and shipping wharf as well as thousands of jobs.
Stuart Parks, Property Director at Aldi said: “This site complements our expansion plans in Salford and Trafford, with another new store also planned for across the Manchester Ship Canal at Trafford Retail Park. We aim to help the community shop and save closer to home by increasing shopping convenience for both new and existing customers. We look forward to opening the doors of this store in 2020.”
