Adlington Retirement Living welcomed a group of local primary school children to its new retirement living community in Heaton Mersey, Stockport, to plant Daffodils, Primula, Sweet William and Viola with homeowners.
Pupils from Didsbury Road Primary School visited The Woodlands, an Adlington Retirement Living community on Woodlands Road, and joined homeowners for some autumn planting in the community’s beautiful gardens.
Alexandra Johnson, Sales and Marketing Director for Adlington Retirement Living, said: “We thought it would be fun to introduce gardening to a new generation and it’s a lovely way to connect with our local community. The project has been very well received by our homeowners. They thoroughly enjoyed sharing their gardening knowledge and experience with the children.”
Adlington Retirement Living’s garden design expert, James King, was on hand along with Josh Slater, to brief the junior budding gardeners and to oversee the planting.
Alexandra Johnson added: “James and his team bring our vision to life for all of our Adlington Retirement Living gardens. They adapt and change their designs to suit each individual location, to ensure a wonderful space for our homeowners to enjoy all year round. They plant bulbs for early Spring colour, evergreens for all year-round coverage and include thoughtful seating and pathways around the gardens to create areas for quiet reflection and a summer house for socialising.”
Mr Walker, a homeowner at The Woodlands said: “James and Josh do a wonderful job with the beautiful landscaped gardens at The Woodlands. It’s such a pleasure to be able to enjoy a lovely space like this without having to take on the regular mowing and maintenance that’s required to keep the gardens looking so lovely.
“The raised beds give those of us who enjoy gardening an opportunity to plant our own flowers and vegetables so we can enjoy spending some time outdoors in the good company of our fellow gardeners.
“It was great fun to pass on our enthusiasm for gardening to the youngsters who visited us today. I hope they will continue to put their new gardening skills to good use!”
The project was coordinated with Joanne Jones, Learning and Welfare Mentor at Didsbury Road Primary School.
Mrs Jones said: “We were so pleased when Adlington Retirement Living got in touch with us with the idea. This project has been a really lovely way for some of our pupils to get to know a different generation from of our local community. The children were so excited to spend the morning learning about gardening. We’re hoping that at some point in the Spring, we’ll be able to visit The Woodlands again so that the children can see the flowers that they planted when they’re in bloom.”
