Channel 4 production teams film at Huddersfield manufacturer, Specialist Glass Products

Huddersfield based glass manufacturer, Specialist Glass Products, has recently welcomed two Channel 4 production teams to film behind the scenes at its factory for upcoming episodes of Amazing Spaces and Grand Designs.

Architect and television presenter, George Clarke, visited the factory in Milnsbridge with his production company Amazing Productions to film for the new series of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. The episode will see the renovation of a former police station and features a toughened glass flooring for a walkway.

In the episode, which is due to air in October, George learns about the processes glass goes through when it is toughened. Andrew Taylor, managing director at Specialist Glass Products, led a personal tour of the factory. The tour began with Andrew showing George the robotic arm which selects large panes of glass to be broken down, demonstrating how glass is cut and polished following which it goes through the toughening process by being subjected to intense heat and then cooled quickly to toughen the material. The tour finished with a demonstration of how glass is laminated and bonded for added safety.

The production team for Grand Designs also paid a visit to the glass expert’s factory to film for an upcoming episode in which bespoke large curved glass window panes are manufactured for a property undergoing a renovation in Cheshire.

Following significant investment in 2019, in which the firm took delivery of new machinery to boost its manufacturing capacity by 80%, it is now one of just a few glass manufacturers in the country able to bend glass measuring up to 6000mm by 32000mm.

Andrew Taylor said, “It was a real pleasure hosting both production teams. We are very much looking forward to watching the shows when they air. Glass is a brilliant material with many capabilities, however, unless you work in the glass industry, you may not be fully aware of all the various processes it goes through to make the glass products we use every day.”
