Embellish With Relish is a cookbook from the heart and the home using kitchen staples crafted by Hawkshead Relish. The book features a variety of dishes that draw on familiar and exciting flavours from around the world to liven up mealtimes at the family table.
The book was launched to the food industry earlier this week (02nd September) by food journalist and broadcaster Nigel Barden who wrote the books foreword and its author Maria Whitehead, at London’s Speciality and Fine Food Fair.
On sale nationally to the public from 09th September the team at Hawkshead Relish have decided to mark the occasion with a special signing by its author Maria Whitehead between 3pm and 7pm at the Hawkshead Relish Shop, The Square, Hawkshead.
Bringing together simple but satisfying meals packed full of flavour Embellish With Relish, includes family favourites, tried and tested classics, inventive creations and a selection of contemporary dishes with a twist so there’s something for everyone.
With stunning food photography and more than 50 individual recipes, to cookbook reveals a little glimpse into the inner workings of Hawkshead Relish and celebrates the people behind this hugely successful family-run business based in the heart of the English Lake District.

Food journalist and broadcaster Nigel Barden is proud to champion Embellish With Relish in the foreword. “My role in life is to champion artisan producers and Hawkshead is exactly the type of company to exalt. The founders, their daughters Abbie and Izzy, and the whole Hawkshead Relish team should be proud of their huge achievements. To capture something of the World Heritage Site that is the Lake District in every one of the 5,000 jars they turn out daily by hand is pretty remarkable.”
The recipes in Embellish With Relish are inspired by Mark and Maria’s travels around the world, as well as their family dinner table, and of course the relishes they produce from their 16th century barn on the shores of Esthwaite Water. They wanted to share the delights of the great food they’ve enjoyed along the way and inspire people to embellish with relish!
“The idea behind this collection of recipes is to make people think a little differently about that stash of relishes most of us have sitting in the cupboard,” says Maria. She added: “We’ve split the recipes into ten chapters, each starring one of our most popular Hawkshead Relish products and we hope everyone finds something to have a go at that will brighten up your family mealtimes.”
