Sheffield pupils celebrate National Share a Story Month with Barratt Developments Yorkshire West

Barratt Developments Yorkshire West arranged for Storyteller Mark Fraser to visit pupils at Wharncliffe Side Primary School

5 star homebuilder, Barratt Developments Yorkshire West has bought its educational book to life for Sheffield pupils with the help of a professional storyteller to mark National Share a Story month this May.

Wharncliffe Side Primary School, which is close to the homebuilder’s Oughtibridge Valley development, received a bundle of ‘We Can Build’ books from Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, which were created by the homebuilder’s graduates and illustrate the home building process.

Barratt Developments Yorkshire West enlisted the help of local storyteller, Mark Fraser to visit the school and help inspire a career in construction for the next generation. The fun-filled day saw pupils aged 2-11 use their imaginations during the interactive storytelling which introduced land planners, site managers and sales managers and the important role they play in building new homes.

Helping the children to celebrate stories and encourage a love for reading, Mark also told a story about a fictional character who has their dream home crafted. The pupils were invited to offer up imaginary items they would choose to put in their new home in an activity to spark creative thinking.

Matt Gaughan, Headteacher at Wharncliffe Side Primary School said: “We were so excited to have a storyteller visit our school. The children really enjoyed Mark’s creative performance and interactive session and loved learning about the different careers in construction. It’s important that our children learn about the different opportunities available to them after education and we’re grateful to Barratt Developments Yorkshire West for its book donation and for arranging this fun activity.”

Ian Ruthven, Managing Director at Barratt Developments Yorkshire West added: “We’re always looking at ways we can support the communities in which we build, so we’re extremely pleased to have been able to work with Wharncliffe Side Primary School to celebrate National Share a Story Month. We hope the children had a great day exploring the world of literature and that some feel inspired to one day consider a career in construction.”

Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, which includes the Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes brands, regularly supports the communities in which it builds and donates monthly to organisations that improve the quality of life for those living in West and South Yorkshire.
