A £300 donation from housebuilder Ashberry Homes has helped community fitness and wellbeing organisation Number One Deeside create a new outdoor exercise space. Located not far from Ashberry’s Jubilee Place development on Welsh Road in Deeside, the funding has been used by Number One to purchase equipment for a new outdoor exercise and wellbeing area designed to inspire and encourage those who prefer a non-traditional gym environment to improve their physical and mental wellbeing.
A not-for-profit community interest company, Number One has been an integral part of the local community in Deeside for the last 10 years. The organisation provides free and low-cost exercise and wellbeing opportunities to people across Flintshire and North Wales with a particular focus on removing barriers to participation and inviting all to become more active in a welcoming and inclusive setting.
The club has 153 members and operates as an open gym from 5am until 10pm every day, offering the usual one-to-one and small group personal training. It also runs a popular running club and Olympic weightlifting club. On a wider scale, the team has partnerships with local community groups delivering a range of free initiatives including sessions for Andy’s Man Club members, Couch to 5K programmes and dedicated activities for women and girls in safe and supportive environments.
The new outdoor training area builds on Number One’s successful approach of offering varied, inclusive and friendly activities that appeal to people of all ages who may not usually engage with conventional exercise programmes and enables the team to broaden its programme even further to reach new audiences.
Owner and head coach at Number One Deeside, Ed Harper, commented: “Passionate about the many benefits of exercise, we are continually looking for new ways to engage people who struggle to access health and wellbeing services. Ashberry’s support has had a huge impact on what we will now be able to offer and will have a significant impact on the local community. “The new space will provide a welcoming environment and a supportive community for those who don’t see traditional gyms as being for them. It will also aim to improve physical and mental wellbeing, build confidence and life skills and offer positive activities that can help reduce antisocial behaviour in our community.”
