Leeds-based Meson Electrical Services is celebrating its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of delivering specialist electrical and control systems across some of the UK’s most technically demanding environments.
Founded in 2006 by James Hennigan, Meson has grown from a small team into a highly respected engineering partner, known for its expertise in hazardous area electrical systems, fuel infrastructure, automation and control systems, EV charging, and commercial solar installations.
Reflecting on the company’s origins, James explains that Meson was established to continue working within specialist hazardous area environments at a time when many contractors were moving away from the sector due to increasing complexity and regulatory demands.
“From the beginning, the aim was simple, deliver high-quality electrical work at a fair price and build a reputation for doing the job properly,” said James.
Building a Specialist Engineering Business
In its early years, Meson focused on electrical installation projects, including petrol station developments, chemical facilities, and commercial environments. Early milestones, such as delivering the Bentley Motors engine test bed automation system, helped establish the company’s credibility within the industry.
A key turning point came with the company’s investment in expanding in-house automation and control capabilities. By adopting platforms such as Siemens TIA Portal and engineering design tools like EPLAN, Meson evolved beyond installation to deliver fully integrated, bespoke control systems.
This shift has become a defining feature of the business and a major differentiator in a competitive market.
Adapting to Industry Change
Over the past two decades, Meson has successfully navigated significant industry challenges, including the 2008 financial crisis and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Throughout this period, the company has continued to evolve in line with changing client needs. What began as a focus on installation has developed into a broader, systems-led approach, where understanding and optimising complex infrastructure is just as important as delivering it.
Today, Meson supports clients across a range of specialist sectors, with a strong emphasis on technically complex environments where precision, safety, and compliance are critical.

Operating in industries such as fuel infrastructure and hazardous environments requires a high level of trust. Meson has built its reputation by taking a systems-based approach to projects, often working closely with clients to develop solutions that go beyond initial specifications.
“We work with teams to look at the bigger picture to deliver end to end outcomes. We are brought in at the early stages to ensure the best possible results,” James said. “Being straightforward and honest with clients has always been central to how we work.”
Collaboration is also a core part of Meson’s approach, with a focus on clear communication and practical problem-solving across all project stakeholders.
Delivering Complex, High-Value Projects
Among the company’s most notable achievements is its long-term involvement in the Advanced Propulsion and Research Laboratory at the University of Warwick, a project that played a key role in developing Meson’s automation capabilities.
Another standout project is the Ford Dunton Technical Centre, another project where Meson was involved from the early feasibility stage through to delivery. The project included the design and implementation of a fully redundant Siemens safety PLC system supporting a complex fuel distribution network.
These projects demonstrate the company’s ability to deliver high-specification engineering solutions in demanding environments.
Looking Ahead
As the energy landscape continues to evolve, Meson is focused on supporting clients through the transition to more sustainable and integrated energy systems.
This includes expanding work in EV infrastructure, renewable energy, and smarter energy management solutions, alongside continued support for essential fuel infrastructure.
“Our focus isn’t growth for the sake of it,” James added. “It’s about sustainable growth in areas where we can genuinely add value. We enjoy solving technical challenges, and the next 10 to 15 years will bring plenty of opportunities to do that.”
A Milestone Moment
Reaching 20 years in business represents a significant milestone for Meson, reflecting both the technical expertise the company has developed and the strong reputation it has built within its sector.
“When you’re running a business day-to-day, you don’t always stop to reflect,” said James. “But looking back, I’m proud of the work we’ve delivered and the reputation we’ve built. At the same time, it still feels like we’re just getting started.”
